A social observation

Airports are odd places. A bunch of disconnected people come together with a single purpose, a single destination in mind (at least, once you've found the right gate). But, the goal is to avoid contact with these others as much as possible. These are not our neighbors, but strangers of whom we can be suspicious and distrustful.
The single exception to this is a small child. He sits in his stroller, happily drumming his hands. He grins at nothing, and yet at everyone, for these new faces he passes are curiosities. They don't seem dangerous; they're just interesting. They're new, and, to this child's mind, "new" simply means fascinating. The adults around him have been taught to suspect, to fear the new. Being so young, he has not yet learned to fear the world, but retains an outlook of happy curiosity.
